Most people think all probiotics are the same. But did you know that even within the same species, some strains can support gut balance — while others may do very little, or even encourage harmful bacteria?
This is why strain specificity matters, and why choosing the right probiotic is essential.
The Research
Research conducted by International Animal Health Products in collaboration with the NSW Department of Primary Industries, compiled by leading microbiologist John Ellerman, tested 49 different probiotic strains against E. coli O157:H7, a harmful bacteria. (see image below)
-
Red strains in the study suppressed the growth of E. coli.
-
Green strains actually encouraged its growth.
This finding shows that probiotics should not be treated as interchangeable. Some are effective at suppressing bad bacteria but some can actually increase the growth of bad bugs.
To make things even more confusing some Lactobacillus Acidophilus suppressed the E.Coli while other Lactobacillus Acidophilus increased the growth. Its due them being different strains of Lactobacillus Acidophilus.
